Many of us are running more or less the same servers and technology stacks that we've been running for many years. However, change is coming. This presentation will give a broad overview of what is meant by Cloud Native Computing and how it applied to a Web Development team at NC State University that transitioned from traditional infrastructure to cloud native techniques and technologies.

Before we get started, we will identify several common problems and annoyances that are encountered when using traditional infrastructure including deployment patterns, testing practices, and differences between development and production environments.

The journey to cloud native practices will begin with containerization using Docker. From there, we will discuss orchestrating containers with Kubernetes, then developing flexible sets of Kubernetes manifests using Helm. Finally, all of the pieces will come together to show a complete Continuous Integration (CI) pipeline using Google Cloud Platform tools, and a Continuous Deployment (CD) pipeline powered by FluxCD.

The end result enables developers to confidently promote fixes/enhancements to production in minutes, simplifies efficient use of compute resources, and greatly reduces barriers to entry for new people joining a project team. If that’s not enough, we also saved thousands of dollars in the process. What impact might cloud native computing have on your department?
